Співочий Potluck у Каплиці (Photos)
On August 17, at the All Saints of the Ukraine Chapel, a Potluck took place: “The Gift of ‘Spasa’: the Intercessory Song of the Theotokos on Earth and in Heaven.”
This title is no coincidence, as throughout August, we celebrate a series of religious feasts. The Dormition Fast is observed during the first two weeks of August. On August 1, we observed the Procession of the Precious Wood of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord and the Martyrs of the Maccabees (among the people, it is also known as Honey “Spasa”, or the First “Spasa”).
Following that, on August 6, came the Transfiguration of Our Lord — one of the 12 Great Feasts of Orthodoxy; among the people, it is also known as Apple “Spasa” or the Second “Spasa”.
And finally, on August 15 — the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos (also one of the 12 Great Feasts), which marks the conclusion of the Dormition Fast. Among the people, it is also known as the Third “Spasa”, or Nut “Spasa”.
This month is also notable because on August 12, 1962, it was on this very day that Pavlo Popovych, the first Ukrainian in space, sang the Ukrainian song “I gaze at the sky and ponder a thought.” It was the first time a Ukrainian song was heard in space!
All of this came together in a beautiful harmony following a special Sunday Divine Liturgy, at the end of which honey, fruits, and flowers were blessed. After gathering in significant numbers and praying together, parishioners traditionally moved to the Arbour Room, where they shared a delicious meal — and soon after, the singing began.
As per our cherished tradition, there was once again a creative corner led with heartfelt care by Tanya Ternovska. With her nurturing warmth and deep sensitivity, she continuously strives to illuminate and nurture the unique gifts of every child in our parish. Together, they shaped little birds out of clay — symbols of the soul and freedom. The children happily sang along to familiar songs, their voices adding a touching and harmonious note to the celebration’s joyful spirit.
This phenomenon is complex to overstate when so many people with hearts embroidered with Ukrainian song gather in one spacious hall, and every note is familiar, and every line a warm memory from years gone by.
Pani Dobrodiyka presented gifts to all the vocalists as a token of appreciation for each voice that day, sounding especially sweet — like the fruit in the blessed baskets — and the mood and genuine smiles resembled the variety of flowers brought by the faithful for blessing.
Some tasted a dish that reminded them of their mother’s cooking, while others heard a song once sung by dear voices that are no longer with us.
And so, it truly was the song of the Theotokos that rang out on earth and in heaven that day.
Undoubtedly, the aftertaste of such a moment — a communal song shared by those who hold God in their hearts and cherish the Ukrainian song as a sacred treasure — lingered with everyone present at this celebration, another testament to the magnificent Ukrainian nation.
Across years, circumstances, generations, oceans and seas, through fates, joys and tears — she sings her song, her confession set to music.

17 серпня у Каплиці Всіх Святих Землі Української відбувся Потлак: “Спасів Дар: заступна пісня Богородиці на землі і небі”.
Ця назва не випадкова, адже саме впродовж серпня ми маємо низку релігійних свят. 1 серпня розпочався двотижневий Успенській піст, було також свято Винесення чесних древ Животворчого Хреста Господнього, Мучеників Макавеїв (У народі - Медовий Спас, або Перший Спас). Затим 6 серпня - Преображення Господнє - одне з 12 найбільших православних свят; у народі: Яблучний Спас або Другий Спас. І, нарешті, 15 серпня - Успіння Пресвятої Богородиці (також одне з 12 найбільших свят). У народі: Третій Спас, або Горіховий Спас.
Особливий цей місяць ще й тому, що 12 серпня 1962 року Павло Попович, перший українець у космосі, виконав українську пісню “Дивлюсь я на небо та й думку гадаю”. Це був перший випадок, коли українська пісня прозвучала в космосі!
Тому після святкової недільної літургії, наприкінці якої відбулося освячення меду, фруктів та квітів, - зазвучала багатоголосо українська пісня. Зібравшись численно всі разом, традиційно в Arbour Room, після спільної молитви, віряни смакували смачні страви, а трохи згодом почався спів.
За незмінною традицією був куточок творчості під пильним наставництвом Тані Терновської, яка своєю материнською теплотою та чуйністю щоразу намагається підсвітити та розвинути талант кожної неповторної дитини у нашій парафії. Вони разом ліпили з глини пташок, як символ душі, волі. Діти радо підспівували зі всіма знайомі пісні. Це гармонійно і зворушливо доповнювало атмосферу свята.
В одній просторій залі зібралося так багато людей з вишитими українською піснею серцями і кожна нота - знайома, і кожен рядок - теплий спомин з минулих літ. Пані Добродійка вручила подарунки всім співакам бо голоси виконавців цього дня звучали особливо солодко, як фрукти в освячених кошиках, а настрій та щирі посмішки нагадували різноманіття квітів, які принесли освячувати прихожани. Хтось скуштував страву, що так сильно нагадала мамину, а дехто - почув пісню, яку співав з дорогими серцю голосами, певні з яких уже поза світами.
Тому і справді пісня Богородиці цього дня звучала на землі і небі спільним співом тих, хто має Бога в серці та українську пісню, як безумовну святиню. Це черговий доказ того, яка українці велична нація: крізь обставини, роки, війни, покоління, океани і моря, долі, радості і сльози співає свою пісню, свою сповідь, покладену на ноти.
