Spasa BBQ: The Last Sunday of Summer, Spent Together
On Sunday, August 30, after the Divine Liturgy, our parish family gathered for the Spasa BBQ — Family Picnic. We had long looked forward to holding our first parish picnic at Christie Pits Park, but the weather had other plans, and the celebration moved to the Cathedral Hall instead. As it turned out, what makes a picnic is not the park — it is the people. Around 60 adults and 20 children spent the last Sunday of summer together, from our youngest guests to our most senior parishioners.
Our volunteers spent the morning preparing, and by the time the Liturgy ended, the hall was ready and the grills — set up just outside the doors — were already hot. Shashlyky and hot dogs, homemade salads, croissants, watermelon, ice cream, and cold drinks kept everyone well fed, and the dishes that families brought to share made our common table even richer. While the adults enjoyed unhurried conversation, the children had a full program of their own: games and activities with animators, and chess with prizes.
Our picnic takes its name from the August feasts of the Saviour — Spas — when we thank God for the fruits of the earth. Gathered around one table, we gave thanks for the gifts of this summer and, above all, for one another: for the community into which God has gathered us — and that does not depend on the weather.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our volunteers, who gave the parish their whole day, and everyone who stayed to help clean up. Summer may be over, but the parish year is only beginning. On September 12–13, we invite students and their families to the Cathedral for a prayer at the start of the school year: Prayer for Students at the Cathedral. And on Sunday, September 20, All Saints of Ukraine Chapel invites everyone to a Back-to-School Moleben & BBQ Picnic.

Spasa BBQ: останню неділю літа провели разом
У неділю, 30 серпня, після Божественної Літургії наша парафіяльна родина зібралася на Spasa BBQ — Сімейний пікнік. Ми давно мріяли провести наш перший парафіяльний пікнік у Christie Pits Park, але погода внесла свої корективи — тож свято переїхало до катедральної зали. І виявилося: пікнік творить не парк, а люди. Близько 60 дорослих і 20 дітей провели останню неділю літа разом — від наймолодших гостей до найстарших парафіян.
Волонтери готувалися з самого ранку, тож коли завершилася Літургія, зала вже чекала на гостей, а грилі, встановлені одразу біля входу, були гарячими. Шашлики та хот-доги, домашні салати, круасани, кавун й прохолодні напої — голодним не залишився ніхто, а страви, які родини принесли для спільного столу, зробили його ще щедрішим. Поки дорослі неспішно спілкувалися, на дітей чекала власна програма: ігри та розваги з аніматорами, а також шахи з призами.
Своєю назвою наш пікнік завдячує серпневим святам Спаса — Медовому, Яблучному та Горіховому, коли ми дякуємо Богові за плоди землі. Зібравшись за одним столом, ми дякували за дари цього літа і понад усе — одне за одного, за спільноту, у якій Бог нас зібрав. А це від погоди не залежить.
Щиро дякуємо нашим волонтерам, які присвятили парафії цілий день, а також усім, хто залишився допомогти з прибиранням. Дякуємо й усім, хто зареєструвався, прийшов і приніс страву для спільного столу. Нехай Господь благословить вас за вашу працю, доброту та щедрість! Запрошуємо переглянути світлини з пікніка.
Літо закінчилося, але парафіяльний рік лише розпочинається. 12–13 вересня запрошуємо учнів та їхні родини до Катедри на молитву з нагоди початку навчального року: Молитва за студентів 2026. А в неділю, 20 вересня, Каплиця Всіх Святих Землі Української запрошує всіх на Молебень до початку навчального року та сімейний BBQ-пікнік.
Дякуємо, що провели останню неділю літа разом із нами. А Christie Pits Park — дасть Бог, побачимося наступного літа!
