All Saints Night at the Cathedral

On Saturday, October 31, the Cathedral belonged to the children. For the second year in a row, we gathered families with kids for All Saints Night.

The evening opened at 5:00 PM with Vespers — and the children did not just attend it; they served it.  The saints we honour on this night are not a theme or a costume; they are the people in whose company we pray at every service, and there was something very right about hearing their praises in children's voices.

Then the hall filled with noise of the best kind. From 6:00 to 8:00 —  games and a table of sweet treats that did not last the evening. For parents, it was two unhurried hours with other families; for the kids, simply a lot of fun in a place that is theirs.

At 8:00 PM, the lights went down, and the hall became a cinema for the screening of Ukrainian Winter Holidays — a short film made in 1942, shown to us courtesy of the National Film Board of Canada. Eighty-four years ago, a film crew visited a Ukrainian community in Canada at Christmas and recorded what they saw: the carolling, the vertep, the Holy Supper, the church. The children saw what their great-grandparents' Christmas looked like — and discovered that it looked very much like their own. And as true Canadians, we start thinking about Christmas the moment Halloween is over, so the timing could not have been better.

Our heartfelt thanks go to the volunteers who prepared the hall, ran the stations, baked and served the treats, and stayed to clean up; to the National Film Board of Canada for permission to show the film; and to every family who came. May God bless you for your service, kindness, and generosity!

And since Christmas is now officially on our minds: on Sunday, December 6, St. Nicholas visits the Cathedral — Dec. 6: St. Nicholas Celebration.

Thank you for spending All Saints Night with us. Holy saints of God, pray for us!

With sincere prayers, St. Volodymyr Cathedral of Toronto
